Beeswax for skin: Benefits and uses

Beeswax is another beneficial substance that comes from honeybees. It can moisturise skin and promote healing. Here’s why you should use beeswax for skin.

People with acne and dry skin swear by honey, a sweet and sticky substance produced by bees. Honey is not the only gift by bees that we can enjoy. You can add beeswax to the list. It is a natural substance produced by honeybees to build the walls of their honeycomb. The waxy material, composed by fatty acids, is secreted by worker bees. It is used in making candles, food preservation, and even skincare products. Since it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, beeswax is good for skin. Interestingly, there are different ways to use beeswax for skin.

What are the benefits of beeswax for skin?

Beeswax has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, according to research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2023. “Due to these properties, this natural substance can help improve the overall condition of a person’s skin,” says cosmetologist and skin expert Dr Jatin Mittal.

Here are some the benefits of beeswax for skin:

1. Moisturisation

Beeswax is a great natural humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. “It can form a protective layer on the skin, and prevent losing moisture while keeping the skin well hydrated,” says the expert.

2. May help people with sensitive skin

During a 2018 study published in the Journal Of Drugs In Dermatology, natural products like beeswax were found to be more superior in managing sensitive skin compared with products consisting of synthetic ingredients. Beeswax can act as a barrier on the skin, shielding it from environmental damage such as pollution and harsh weather. This protective layer can also help prevent irritants from entering the skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin. It is best to avoid skin exposure to irritants, as they can trigger inflammation.

3. Healing properties

Beeswax can be used to treat bruises, burns, and cracked heels, as per research published in the Frontiers in Pharmacology in 2017. “Beeswax contains vitamin A, which is essential for cell regeneration,” says Dr Mittal. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help heal wounds, minor cuts, and burns. So, beeswax can promote faster recovery and improve skin texture.

4. Anti-ageing

Beeswax contains vitamin A, which can help to protect the skin against ultraviolet rays, and reduce wrinkles, as per research published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2016. “The vitamin A can help in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by aiding in the production of healthy skin cells,” says the expert. Also, the ability of beeswax to lock in moisture can help the skin looking plump and youthful, and prevent premature ageing.

5. May soothe chapped lips

Beeswax is commonly used in lip balms due to its emollient properties. “It can give a protective barrier that can lock in moisture, and soothe your dry and cracked lips,” says Dr Mittal.

How to use beeswax for skin?

Here are some of the ways to use beeswax for skin:

  • Beeswax can be used as a natural moisturiser by itself or as an ingredient in homemade balms and lotions.
  • Beeswax is a popular ingredient in lip balms due to its ability to protect and heal chapped lips. It forms a barrier on the lips, keeping them moisturised and preventing further dryness.
  • Beeswax is often used in ointments for its healing properties. It can be combined with other ingredients like essential oils to soothe irritated skin, and heal wounds.
  • When mixed with sugar or salt, beeswax can be used as a gentle exfoliant to help remove dead skin cells.
  • Beeswax can be used as a natural makeup primer, as it can smoothen the skin’s surface, and allow for better makeup application.

What are the side effects of beeswax for skin?

“Beeswax can be used every day on the skin, as it is a gentle, and safe for different skin types, including sensitive skin,” says Dr Mittal. Daily use of beeswax-based products can help maintain skin hydration, protect against environmental damage, and keep the skin looking healthy. Beeswax is safe for most people, but there can be side effects too. Some of them are –

  • People who are allergic to bee products may experience an allergic reaction, including redness, swelling, or itching when using beeswax on the skin.
  • In some cases, especially for those with acne-prone skin, beeswax might clog pores, leading to breakouts.
  • Some people may experience skin sensitivity or irritation from beeswax, especially if it is used in a product with other ingredients that are not tolerated well by the skin.

Using beeswax is a good way to take care of your skin. But in some cases, it can lead to allergic reactions, so make sure to do a patch test before including beeswax in skincare routine.
