What is a corneal injury?
The cornea is the tissue covering the front of the eye, and it is translucent. It focuses images on the retina by utilizing the eye’s lens. Any wound on the outer layer of the eye or cornea is referred to as corneal injury, as per a report by Penn Medicine.
Symptoms of a corneal injury
- Blurry vision
- Pain or burning sensation in the eye
- Sensitivity to light
- Redness
- Swollen eyelids
- Watery eyes
- Feeling that there is something in the eye
Possible causes of corneal injuries
Eye corneal injuries can happen due to several different reasons, including:
1. Abrasions
A corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch on the cornea, which is referred to as the window of the eye. It can be scratched due to sand, wood, metal particles, dust, dirt, contact lenses, or even the edge of a piece of paper. Common symptoms of corneal abrasion include pain, blurry vision, tearing, redness, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and headache.
2. Chemical exposure
Any contact with acids, alkalis, or other chemicals can damage the cornea. It usually happens when your eyes come into contact with any fluid. However, it can also happen from rubbing your eyes while handling chemicals. If there is redness or you feel a burning sensation, you should talk to your doctor immediately. It can also trigger symptoms such as stinging, pain, swelling of the eyelids, blurry vision, or watery eyes.
3. Contact lenses
Overuse, poor hygiene or fit, or wearing lenses for extended periods can lead to corneal abrasions or infections. While most of these problems are believed to heal well if it does not go away you need to consult a doctor.

4. Dry eyes
Dry eyes are a common condition that occurs when your tears are enough to provide lubrication to your eyes. This condition can be very uncomfortable. Severe dry eyes can cause inflammation of the eyes, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcers, and vision loss if left untreated.
5. UV radiation
Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can cause corneal burns (photokeratitis). Constant exposure to UV rays can damage the cornea and conjunctiva of the eyes.
